New York, May 6: Six Indian citizens, aged 19 to 21, were detained by US border officials aboard a sinking boat following a failed effort to smuggle themselves into America from Canada.
US Customs and Border Protection said in a statement Thursday that agents from the Massena Border Patrol Station apprehended seven people in connection with a failed smuggling attempt early Thursday morning with the help of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police Department, the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service, and the Hogansburg-Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department (HAVFD).
Six of the individuals, all between the ages of 19 and 21, are Indian citizens who have been charged with Improper Entry by Alien in violation of US law. The seventh person, a US citizen, was charged with Alien Smuggling, a crime that carries a fine and a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison for each infraction.
Last week, the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service received a tip regarding a boat carrying many people travelling from Canada near Ontario to the United States, and contacted the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police Department.
