New Delhi: The national capital saw marginal relief in air quality on Sunday morning, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) improving from the “very poor” category to “poor.” CPCB data recorded an AQI of 269 at 7 am, an improvement from the 305 level logged on Saturday evening. However, a dense layer of smog continued to blanket several parts of the city.
Multiple Areas Still In “Very Poor” Category
Despite the overall improvement, several monitoring stations continued to report alarming pollution levels. Shadipur registered the highest AQI at 335, followed by Jahangirpuri (324), Nehru Nagar (319), RK Puram (307), and the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences in Dilshad Garden (303). Mandir Marg recorded the cleanest air among major stations with an AQI of 158, falling in the “moderate” category. A large number of neighbourhoods, including Bawana, Sirifort, Rohini, Vivek Vihar, Mundka, Dwarka Sector 8, Chandni Chowk, and ITO remained in the “poor” category.
Political Row Intensifies Over Pollution Management
With winter pollution conditions persisting, the Delhi government stated that it is reviewing AQI levels every day and implementing necessary measures. However, political tensions escalated after senior Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit accused the government of failing to protect citizens, terming the pollution crisis as “murder” of Delhi residents due to shrinking life expectancy in toxic air. Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi reinforced the criticism, calling for a debate in Parliament on Delhi’s worsening pollution situation.
