Rameswaram, Feb 8: The Sri Lankan Navy arrested eleven fishermen from Rameswaram and Thangachimadam who were fishing near Katchatheevu late Monday night on allegations of breaching the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL).

“Due to the tension prevailing between the fishermen of both the nations, Rameswaram fishermen stayed off the seas and set out for fishing on Monday around 3 pm after a gap of eight days,” said fishermen leader VP Jesuraja.

Around 10 p.m. on Monday, Sri Lankan Navy forces on patrol duty near Katchatheevu apprehended 11 fishermen who were aboard three mechanised boats belonging to U Manikanda Prabhu, P Xavier, and S Sahaya Robin.

R Ramesh (34), A Senthurpandi (45), and B Antony Siluvai (37) have been arrested and are being held at Myliddy harbour near Jaffna.

Earlier, the release of 43 Rameswaram fishermen who were detained on December 18 is being postponed despite a court ruling issued on January 25, and the Sri Lankan government has begun auctioning boats seized from Tamil fishermen on Monday.
