Ranchi, April 6: An intermittent stone-pelting for an hour took place between two communities in the morning at Bhatti Road and Shivaji Chowk in Khunti, about 40km from here.

The incident was a fallout of a dispute that took place on Tuesday night over the movement of the Ram Navami procession from Azad Road, the traditional path of movement of the procession.

“After the ceremonial procession which is organized every year as a part of Ram Navami celebration was disrupted last night and the police failed to arrest anyone in connection, people observed Khunti Bandh today. In order to enforce the bandh, the bandh supporters had taken out a procession.  As the procession passed through Bhatti Road, local people resorted to  stone-pelting from the rooftop to stop their progress. As people participating in the procession dispersed and went towards Shivaji Chowk they again came under rain of brick pieces. In retaliation, they also resorted to brick batting till police and peace lovers interfered and brought the situation under control,” a locality resident said.

Superintendent of police of the district, Ashutosh Shekhar, confirmed the incident saying the situation is under control. Asked whether anyone was arrested in this connection, he said ‘no’.

Before the incident in Khunti, a similar situation had arisen in Hindpiri in the Jharkhand capital but alert policemen averted the situation.

“Last last around 11pm in Hindpiri, a dispute over the path of the procession movement had also taken place. However, alert policemen controlled the situation properly. Officer-in-charge of Hindpiri police station was suspended for his failure in being strict with those taking out a procession from the prohibited path where a mosque is located and people had assembled to offer night prayer.”
