New Delhi: The Supreme Court has cancelled the bail granted to popular Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa in the murder case of 33-year-old fan Renukaswamy, who was allegedly kidnapped, assaulted, and killed by the actor and his associates. The court observed that granting bail in this case could adversely impact the trial and influence witnesses.
Court Slams High Court’s Bail Order
A bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan overturned the Karnataka High Court’s earlier decision, calling it a mechanical and perverse exercise of judicial power. Justice Mahadevan’s order was praised by Justice Pardiwala as “erudite” and carrying the strong message that no one, regardless of stature, is above the law.
Warning Against VIP Treatment In Custody
The bench also issued a stern warning against providing VIP treatment to Darshan in custody, following reports and images showing him enjoying special privileges in a Bengaluru jail. Justice Pardiwala stated that any such misconduct would lead to immediate suspension of the jail superintendent and all responsible officials.
Victim’s Family Welcomes Decision
Renukaswamy’s father, Kashinatha Shivanagowdaru, expressed relief and gratitude, saying the Supreme Court’s decision restored his faith in the judiciary. His wife echoed the sentiment, adding that anyone guilty should be punished according to the law.
