New Delhi: The Supreme Court will resume its suo motu hearing on Tuesday, September 17, concerning the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College on August 9. This hearing comes amidst ongoing protests by junior doctors demanding justice and security improvements.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which took over the case from the Kolkata Police following orders from the Calcutta High Court, is set to present a confidential status report to the Supreme Court regarding the progress of the investigation. The CBI is not only probing the alleged rape and murder but also investigating financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College involving former principal Sandip Ghosh and others.
Legal Representation in the Case
The West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Forum (WBJDF) will be represented by senior lawyer Indira Jaising in the hearing. Jaising is recognized for her efforts in pushing for the live-streaming of Supreme Court proceedings, which was previously approved by a bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud.
Additionally, the Joint Platform of Doctors, an association of senior doctors supporting the protests, will be represented by senior counsel Karuna Nandi and Sabyasachi Chattopadhyay. The West Bengal government, headed by the ruling Trinamool Congress, will continue to be represented by senior advocate Kapil Sibal.
