New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India today made an earnest appeal to doctors protesting across the country to call off their strike and return to work, following the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The court emphasized that the ongoing strike affects vulnerable segments of society who are in dire need of medical care.
A three-judge bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud addressed the doctors, saying, “Please trust us. We are here to ensure that your safety and protection is a matter of the highest national concern. That is why we have not left this matter to the high court. We felt this is not just a matter of a serious offense but one that affects the institution of healthcare across India. Therefore, the Supreme Court had to take up the matter.”
The case, which has sparked nationwide protests from the medical community, was taken up by the Supreme Court suo-motu. The court’s intervention comes in the wake of intense public and professional outrage over the tragic incident in Kolkata.
The Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association has welcomed the Supreme Court’s involvement, expressing hope that it will address the concerns of the medical fraternity. The court’s appeal highlighted the critical importance of doctors resuming work, particularly for those segments of society most in need of medical attention.
“The abstention from work by doctors affects those who need medical care the most,” the bench stated, urging medical professionals to resume their duties. “Rest assured, your concerns are receiving the highest level of attention from the Supreme Court.”
The Supreme Court’s intervention is seen as a significant step in addressing the safety and well-being of medical professionals in India, and the court’s assurances are expected to influence the ongoing protests.
