Surat, April 3: The Surat Sessions Court on Monday granted bail to Rahul Gandhi in the defamation case over his ‘Modi surname’ remark. The case will be heard next on April 13.
Rahul Gandhi appealed his conviction earlier today at the Surat Sessions Court. Two applications—one for suspension of sentence, which is effectively a request for standard bail, and the other for suspension of conviction—have been submitted together with the appeal.
If the second application is approved, his Lok Sabha membership will be restored, subject to the LS Secretariat issuing a notification in this respect.
Notably, Rahul Gandhi was found guilty by a lower court and given a two-year prison term last month for remarks he made in which he claimed that PM Modi and two wanted businessmen had the same surname. He was released on bail for 30 days so that he may challenge the judgement. He lost his status as a Lok Sabha member the next day.
