New Delhi: Rohit Sharma’s motivational leadership has earned him a place in the annals of Indian cricket history, becoming the second Indian captain after Mahendra Singh Dhoni to lead the Men in Blue to T20 World Cup glory. After enduring two ICC final defeats last year—the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup—the pressure was immense on the five-time IPL-winning skipper to end India’s ICC title drought. Sharma rose to the occasion, guiding India through an unbeaten campaign with standout performances against formidable teams like England and Australia.
In a revealing interview with the Indian Express, Suryakumar Yadav shared the details of Sharma’s powerful speech before the T20 World Cup final against South Africa. In the team huddle, Sharma urged his players to give everything they had for the game. “I can’t climb this mountain alone. If I have to reach the peak, I will need everyone’s oxygen. He also said, ‘Joh bhi hai, paon mein, dimag mein, dil mein (Whatever you have in your legs, mind, and heart), just bring everything to the game. If that happens, we will not regret the night,'” Suryakumar recalled. The speech moved everyone present and set the tone for the match.
India’s stars battled fiercely until the end, staging a remarkable comeback in the final five overs to defeat South Africa. Sharma’s proactive captaincy, which included promoting Axar Patel in the batting order and strategic bowling decisions, played a crucial role in the victory. The bowlers delivered tight lines and variations, while the fielders supported them with exceptional plays. Suryakumar’s brilliant catch near the boundary in the final over was pivotal in sealing India’s win.
Suryakumar, who has been a key player under Sharma’s leadership, praised his captain’s ability to connect with players both on and off the field. “He connects with the players. Off the field, be it in a hotel room or on the beach, he connects with everyone. So when a crunch situation comes, players know that he (Rohit) will back us. One feels I have to deliver for this man for the confidence and respect he gives to everyone,” Suryakumar added.
Rohit Sharma’s inspirational leadership and the unwavering support of his team culminated in a historic T20 World Cup triumph, marking a significant milestone in Indian cricket.
