New Delhi, July 8: Police announced that Tetsuya Yamagami, a 41-year-old male, had been brought into custody in connection with the shooting shortly after former Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo had been shot at while giving a speech for an election campaign on Friday.
Security forces on the scene eventually overcame Yamagami and took him into jail. Police also found a gun at the scene of Abe’s shooting.
Abe was reportedly rushed to a hospital, and the fire brigade said that he is not exhibiting any vital signs. Abe was backing the election campaign of a candidate for the Liberal Democratic Party. He passed out sometime after 11:30 a.m.
He is in cardiopulmonary arrest, according to the fire service. He will be transported to a separate hospital through medevac. According to the police, Abe looks to have been shot with a shotgun from behind.
Abe was bleeding, according to an NHK reporter who was present. The reporter twice heard what sounded like a gunshot.
