New Delhi: The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences on Wednesday announced the winners of the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry — Susumu Kitagawa (Japan), Richard Robson (Australia), and Omar M Yaghi (USA) — for their pioneering work in the development of metal-organic frameworks.
Breakthrough In Metal-Organic Frameworks
The Academy recognised the trio’s contributions to developing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a class of porous crystalline materials with applications in gas storage, separation, catalysis, and environmental protection. Their discoveries have opened new frontiers in materials chemistry and are now used in areas ranging from clean energy to medicine.

Prize Ceremony To Be Held In Stockholm
Each laureate will receive 11 million Swedish kronor (approximately ₹10.3 crore), a gold medal, and a diploma. The Nobel Prizes will be formally awarded on December 10 in Stockholm, coinciding with the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.
Since 1901, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded 116 times to 195 laureates up to 2024.
