New Delhi, March 26: Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, a doubles team from India, advanced to the Swiss Open 2023 final on March 25th, keeping the country’s prospects of a championship triumph alive.

In a thrilling final four-stage match that lasted one hour and nine minutes, the pair upset Malaysia’s third seeds Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi 21-19 17-21 21-17.

In the top match on Sunday, Satwik-Chirag will now take on the unseeded Chinese team of Ren Xiang Yu and Tan Qiang. The pair represented India’s last chance to win the championship as players like PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikkanth, and Lakshya Sen had already been eliminated.

When they beat the Danish team of Jeppe Bay and Lasse Molhede in three tense games in the quarterfinals, Satwik and Chirag engaged in a similar type of struggle. The Indian team battled back after dropping the first game to overcome Bay and Molhede 15-21 21-11 21-14 and go to the semi-final, where they faced a different kind of obstacle.

In their matchup in the final four, Satwik and Chirag got out to a strong start and lead their opponents 11-8 at the half. Afterwards the first game would end with a score of 19-17 thanks to a comeback by Sin and Yi. The Indian team, though, managed to hang on and won the match 21-19 in the end.

The Malaysian team benefited from the change of ends as they were able to gain a four-point advantage and then go on to win the second game to tie the match at one.

In the championship game, Sin and Yi also held an edge, but Satwik-Chirag quickly grabbed control and eventually increased their lead to 18-11. The Indian pair were too strong and won the match 21-17, despite the Malaysian team’s best efforts to stage a comeback.
