Basel, March 27: Indian shuttler and world no 7 player Sindhu won the Swiss Open on Sunday, defeating fourth seed Busanan Ongbamrungphan 21-16, 21-8 in the final at the St. Jakobshalle arena in Basel.

Sindhu was dominant against the Thai player, winning the women’s singles title at the Super 300 badminton competition in just 49 minutes. This is Sindhu’s second Super 300 title of the year. Earlier, she won the Syed Modi International in January.

Sindhu, who was competing in her second final, took an early 7-5 lead before Busanan rallied to make it 16-15. However, the 26-year-old Indian rebounded quickly and won the first game 21-16.

In the second game, the two-time Olympic medalist was ruthless, storming to a 5-0 lead. Sindhu took an 11-2 lead at the mid-game break, edging closer to her first Swiss Open triumph. Busanan, who was down by a mile, made a dismal attempt at a comeback as Sindhu extended the lead to 17-4.

Sindhu never faced any real opposition in the second game after switching ends with such a large lead. The ace Indian shuttler eventually won the game 21-8 to complete a rout of her opponent in consecutive games.

Sindhu had previously defeated Thailand’s Supanida Katethong in a 79-minute semi-final 21-18 15-21 21-19. Sindhu was the clear favourite to win the final, having beaten Busanan 15 times in the previous 16 matches. Sindhu now has a 16-1 head-to-head record versus the Thai player after her victory.
