New Delhi, Oct 12: Due to fitness concerns, fast bowler Deepak Chahar has been disqualified from the T20 World Cup 2022 while India waits to find a substitute for injured Jasprit Bumrah in the 15-man roster. Chahar was selected to be a member of the backups for the World Cup, which begins on October 16 in Australia.
Deepak Chahar has been playing well ever since he was able to play against Zimbabwe in Harare after a protracted injury layoff. Although Chahar was a member of the World Cup backup bowling unit, the off-spinner Washington Sundar took Chahar’s place in the just finished ODI series against South Africa. According to the BCCI, Chahar missed the final two ODIs because of a stiff back.
On Thursday, October 13, the trio of Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, and Shardul Thakur were scheduled to depart for Australia. The three pacers will join the team, which is presently preparing for the T20 World Cup in Perth.
After recovering from Covid-19, which kept him out of the T20I series against South Africa and Australia at home, Shami, who is widely seen as the favourite to succeed Jasprit Bumrah in the squad, will undergo his final fitness test at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.
In the meantime, Mohammed Siraj has put himself in the running to replace Jasprit Bumrah following some strong showings in the just-completed white-ball series against South Africa.
With 5 wickets from 3 games, Siraj was named the ODI series’ Player of the Series. Siraj used the bouncers effectively to control the run flow while maintaining an excellent rhythm with the new ball.
After evaluating the three fast bowlers in Australian conditions, India would like to announce Bumrah’s replacement, but Shami appears to be the undisputed front-runner, according to information obtained by India Today.
