Ramgarh: The Environment Department of Tata Steel West Bokaro Division in association with Tata Steel Foundation celebrated World Earth Day at Tata DAV Public School Chainpur and sensitized the students on this year’s theme ‘Invest in Our Planet’.

The programme began with a special assembly on Saturday where all the students took a pledge to protect Mother Earth.  This was followed by a Green Walk, where students took out a rally from the school premises to Sondiha and raised slogans of Earth Day.

A poster making competition was organized for the students of class 1 to 5 in the school.  Prizes were given to the winners and consolation prizes to the participants as a token of appreciation.

A team from the Department of Environment addressed the students and made them understand the importance of investing in our planet by protecting biodiversity, conserving natural resources and promoting sustainable practices.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Shakuntala Giri, Principal of DAV Public School, Chainpur. Giri appreciated the efforts put in by Tata Steel in organizing such a wonderful and informative event.  She talked about the importance of waste management and water conservation.

The Green Library was also inaugurated on this occasion.  The aim of the library was to create awareness about sustainable practices among the students.  A total of 500 students participated in this programme.  Officials from Environment Department, West Bokaro Division, Tata Steel and Tata Steel Foundation were present on the occasion.

Earth Day is observed every year on 22 April to demonstrate support for environmental protection.  The first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970, and has been held every year since then.
