Jamshedpur, Sept 18: Tata Steel’s Sukinda Chromite Mine has won the Hindalco-Aditya Birla Award for Sustainable Mining at the Federation of Indian Mineral Industries (FIMI) Awards 2022–23, organised in the national capital on Monday.

The award was conferred on the chromite mine for its efforts towards biodiversity conservation and sustainable mining.

Shambhu Nath Jha, Head (Mining), Sukinda Chromite Mine, was also presented with the certificate for his significant contribution towards the outstanding performance of the mine on the occasion. Instituted by the FIMI, the award ceremony was organised on the occasion of the FIMI’s 57th Annual General Meeting.

Pankaj Satija, Executive-in-Charge, Ferro Alloys and Minerals Division, Tata Steel, said, “We are delighted to have been conferred with the prestigious award. I thank the jury members for acknowledging our comprehensive sustainability framework and unstinted commitment towards responsible and sustainable mining practices.”

As an environmentally responsible and concerned corporate citizen, Tata Steel has adopted numerous sustainable initiatives at its chromite mines, like the energy and water audit of the operating locations of FAMD.

At its Ferro Alloys Plants, it has undertaken initiatives like replacing furnace oil with cleaner fuel, natural gas, at Athagarh and Gopalpur, and implementing an AI-based platform for improved traceability, minimising losses, and optimising energy consumption.
