New Delhi, May 25: The National Investigation Agency has demanded death penalty for Yasin Malik, a convicted Kashmiri separatist leader who pled guilty to all counts in a terror funding case, including those under the strict Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). A Delhi court will rule on the severity of the punishment in the case today.
The case’s arguments are completed, and the court will render its decision at 3:30 p.m. today. Instead of the death penalty, the defence has requested life imprisonment.
In this case, the NIA has requested the maximum penalty under Section 121 (waging war against the government), which is the death penalty. The minimum sentence is life in prison.
Meanwhile, parts of Srinagar were shut down today in anticipation of the ruling. In certain parts of the city, shops and other businesses were closed. Public transportation and private automobiles, on the other hand, were operating normally.
Officials said security personnel have been deployed in key areas of Srinagar to avoid a law-and-order crisis.
Malik had put up an intricate structure and mechanism around the world to gather finances for terrorist and other criminal operations in Jammu and Kashmir in the name of freedom struggle’, according to the court.
