New Delhi, Oct 19: The Congress will elect its first non-Gandhi leader today in more almost 20 years. Shashi Tharoor will be up against seasoned politician Mallikarjun Kharge.

The election takes place three years after Sonia Gandhi consented to serve as the party’s acting leader when Rahul Gandhi resigned, accepting accountability for the party’s two straight defeats in the national elections of 2014 and 2019.

On October 17, around 9,900 party delegates cast their ballots at 36 locations across the nation. The sealed ballot boxes from the voting booths were transported to Delhi on Tuesday and kept at the party office in a strong room.

At the AICC headquarters, the vote-counting process started on Wednesday at 10 a.m. At between 3 and 4 o’clock, the result will probably be announced.
