The Kerala Story: SC stays West Bengal govt’s ban

New Delhi, May 18: The West Bengal government’s order prohibiting the screening of “The Kerala Story” in the state was stayed on Thursday by the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court suspended the state government’s order and ruled that West Bengal has a responsibility to maintain law and order. “Law cannot be used to put a premium on public intolerance, otherwise all films will land in the same spot,” the court noted.

The decision was made a few days after the producers of “The Kerala Story” petitioned the Supreme Court to lift the West Bengal government’s ban on the movie.

Prior to this, the Supreme Court sent a notice to the West Bengal government in response to a plea filed by the film’s producers against the prohibition.

The Supreme Court ordered Tamil Nadu to refrain from taking any action to prevent the film’s screening and to protect all moviegoers in relation to the state’s shadow ban on it.

“The film will be screened in both Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Filmmakers need to put a disclaimer saying that the story is fictional and there is no evidence for the figure of 32,000,” the court noted.
