Kolkata: A major controversy erupted on Friday after Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra made an objectionable comment against Union Home Minister Amit Shah during a media interaction in Nadia district, West Bengal. Her remarks came just a day after a Congress platform in Bihar witnessed abusive language directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mother, further fueling political tensions.
Moitra’s Controversial Statement
When asked by reporters about illegal infiltration in West Bengal, Moitra said Amit Shah’s “head should be placed on the table,” a comment that has triggered sharp criticism. She accused the Home Minister of repeatedly branding people as “infiltrators” while failing to prevent cross-border entries despite the Border Security Force (BSF) operating under his ministry.
She further referred to Prime Minister Modi’s Independence Day speech, where he warned about demographic changes due to infiltration. Moitra alleged that while the Prime Minister spoke, Amit Shah was applauding, yet doing little to secure India’s borders.
BJP Files Complaint
The BJP quickly reacted to the remarks, filing a police complaint against Mahua Moitra at Kotwali police station in Krishnanagar, Nadia district. Party leaders condemned her comments as unacceptable and dangerous, demanding strong action.
Context of Political Tensions
Moitra argued that despite BSF presence, infiltration from Bangladesh continued, which she said endangered local communities. She also claimed that Bangladesh had historically been a friend of India but blamed the Modi government for worsening the situation.
Her comments have now added to the charged political climate, with opposition leaders accusing the BJP of double standards while the ruling party frames Moitra’s remarks as proof of TMC’s “irresponsible politics.”
