Jalpaiguri, Sept 8: Officials reported on Friday that in a by-election, the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) successfully secured the Dhupguri assembly seat in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district, taking it back from the BJP.
Nirmal Chandra Roy, a college professor and TMC candidate, secured victory in the election by a margin of more than 4,000 votes. His closest competitor was Tapasi Roy from the BJP, who is the widow of a CRPF jawan killed in a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir in 2021, officials said.
They stated that the Congress-backed CPI(M) candidate Ishwar Chandra Roy came in a far-off third place.
Abhishek Banerjee, national general secretary of the TMC, stated that the residents of Dhupguri embraced the politics of development above bigotry and hatred.
“Saluting every AITC worker for their tireless efforts in connecting with the people. We’re committed to leaving no stone unturned in ensuring Dhupguri’s all-round development,” he posted on X.
Thank you #Dhupguri, for embracing the politics of development over hatred and bigotry. Saluting every AITC worker for their tireless efforts in connecting with the people. We're committed to leaving no stone unturned in ensuring Dhupguri's all-round development. 🙏🏻

At North Bengal University’s Jalpaiguri II campus, the counting was conducted under heavy security.
On September 5, voting for the by-election took place. A 78% turnout of the voters was recorded.
The death of BJP MLA Bishnu Pada Ray on July 25 forced a byelection.
