Ranchi, Sept 28: Pragya Choudhary from Jharkhand and a top LLM student at the National University of Singapore (NUS) Law, has received the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators Medal and Prize, donated by the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators (SIArb).

It is a newly established award that recognises the top student in the Masters of Law (International Arbitration and Dispute Resolution) Programme at the National University of Singapore (NUS) Law.

Pragya is the daughter of Justice Anubha Rawat Choudhary of the Jharkhand High Court.

Pragya Choudhary, who is enrolled in the Jharkhand Bar Council but practices at the Supreme Court of India and Delhi High Court, is the first recipient of the award.

Given the diversity of arbitration courses at the Faculty, SIArb has chosen to collaborate with NUS Law to develop the arbitration community in Singapore and beyond.

Of her win, she says: “I would like to thank SIArb for setting up the award in NUS Law to recognise and support a younger generation of practitioners in the field of dispute resolution. I resonate with the foundational values and vision of SIArb. With my dual LLM in dispute resolution from NUS and MIDS (Geneva), I am now practising in the field of commercial laws and dispute resolution in India. This award gives me purpose and zeal to achieve greater heights in this profession with more focus, dedication and hard work.”

According to a report posted on the NUS Law website, the SIArb Medal and Prize is a new iteration of a previous prize sponsored by SIArb at the Department of the Built Environment since 1995, for the best student in Arbitration and Dispute Resolution. SIArb transferred the award to the Faculty this year and enhanced its monetary contribution to $25,000, reinforcing SIArb’s commitment to promoting the use of arbitration and other dispute resolution mechanisms.

Professor Andrew Simester, Dean of NUS Law, says: “Our congratulations go to Ms Choudhary on her fine achievement in topping the International Arbitration and Dispute Resolution Programme. Her hard work has certainly paid off, and we shall watch her future career with considerable interest. NUS Law is also very grateful for the support we have received from SIArb. We are excited to be working with the Institute in supporting the development of our blossoming arbitration community.”

Yu Jin Tay, the President of SIArb, says: “As part of SIArb’s 40th-anniversary celebrations, we are very pleased to be in a position to award the SIArb Medal and Prize to the top student in the Masters of Law (International Arbitration and Dispute Resolution) Programme at NUS Law. This milestone presented us with an opportunity to enhance our support for NUS and its students, in line with our core mission of education and development of future generations of arbitration leaders in Singapore.”

SIArb’s core mission includes the education and accreditation of arbitration practitioners, the development of the profession of arbitrator, as well as providing social and networking opportunities for all those involved in arbitration in Singapore.
