Ranchi, Feb 4: The armed cadres of banned left-wing outfit Tritiya Prastuti Committee (TPC) set on fire construction equipment on Thursday night at Sadam village under Burmu police station, about 45 km from here.

“This is the handiwork of the TPC and we are investigating as to which group was involved in the arson. A government project of pond construction was going on at the village where criminals set on fire earth mover,” said Ranchi SP (Rural) Naushad Alam.

On being asked whether TPC had demanded any levy from the contractor, the SP said that the contractor had not informed anything to the police of whether TPC demanded a levy against construction.

Meanwhile, the additional force has been deployed and operation is going on and the FIR is being lodged.

The incident took place on Thursday night around 10 PM when as many as six TPC operatives came to the construction site. They assaulted labourers and further put construction equipment on fire.

The construction work is being done by contractor Manoj Gupta which is a land conservation project of the state government. Sources said that a self-styled commander of TPC identified as Dinesh had threatened the contractor with dire consequences if he did not pay the levy amount to him.

He had even asked to stop the digging work till the levy amount was paid.
