Kolkata: Senior Trinamool Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP, Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, announced his intention to join a midnight protest in Kolkata, condemning the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The protest, aimed at demanding justice for the victim, is set to take place at 11:55 PM, symbolizing a call for women’s independence on the eve of Independence Day.

Ray, a veteran politician with a strong legacy, expressed his personal connection to the cause on social media platform X. “Tomorrow, I will join the protesters, particularly because I have a daughter and little granddaughter, like millions of Bengali families. We must rise to the occasion. Enough of cruelty against women. Let’s resist together, come what may,” he stated. Despite concerns raised by supporters about potential backlash from his party, Ray remained steadfast, noting that he is unafraid and driven by the values instilled in him by his freedom-fighter lineage.

The horrific incident that has shaken Kolkata involves the brutal rape and murder of the young doctor while she was on night duty at the state-run hospital. Her body was discovered on Friday morning in a seminar hall, bearing severe injuries. The case has sparked widespread outrage, leading to the arrest of Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer who was frequently present at the hospital.

The Calcutta High Court, acknowledging serious lapses in the hospital’s administration and the risk of evidence tampering, has transferred the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The court expressed frustration over the slow progress, noting, “Even after five days, there have been no significant conclusions which should have happened by now.”

The midnight protest in Kolkata is expected to draw large crowds, with women and men alike coming together to demand justice and stand against violence. Prominent figures, including actors Swastika Mukherjee and Churni Ganguly, and filmmaker Pratim D Gupta, have also urged the public to participate in the protest at various locations across the state.
