Agartala, Sept 8: According to the Election Commission, the BJP won the by-elections for the Dhanpur and Boxanagar assembly seats in Tripura’s Sepahijala district on Friday.
With almost 66% of the electorate being members of a minority, Tafajjal Hossain of the BJP won the Boxanagar seat by 30,237 votes. Mizan Hossain of the CPI(M), Hossain’s closest competitor, received 3,909 votes to Hossain’s 34,146.
The Dhanpur seat, which has a sizable tribal population, was won by BJP candidate Bindu Debnath by 18,871 votes. Debnath received 30,017 votes, while Kaushik Chanda of the CPI(M) received 11,146.
The by-election voting took place on September 5. In the two seats, an average turnout of 86.50 per cent was noted. The counting of votes took place at Sonamura Girls’ School with stringent security measures in place.
