New Delhi, Feb 16: Voting for the Tripura Assembly election is taking place on Thursday, amid tight security. In order to remove the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from office in the northeastern state, arch foes Congress and CPI-M have banded together. The Left-Congress coalition and TIPRA Motha, the newest regional party in the state, are competing against the ruling BJP and its alliance partner Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) in this three-way race.
Tripura recorded a voter turnout of 13.23 per cent till 9 am. This is an approximate trend and does not include data of postal ballot voting.
Meanwhile, Tripura CM Dr Manik Saha cast his vote at the Maharani Tulsubati Girls’ High School in the Town Bordowali assembly constituency. After casting his vote for Tripura assembly polls, Manik Saha said, “It feels good. I urge all voters to cast their vote.”
The BJP is running for 55 seats, and its ally is running for six seats, since both parties have Ampinagar-based candidates on their ballots. The Left is running for 47 seats, compared to 13 for Congress, and includes the CPM, Forward Bloc, Communist Party of India (CPI), and Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP). The TIPRA Motha, headed by royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, is contesting on 42 seats.
Notably, the counting of votes will be done on March 2.
