Georgia, USA: The 14-year-old boy responsible for a deadly school shooting in Georgia, which left two students and two teachers dead, was raised in a deeply troubled household, according to family members and neighbors. The shooter, who used an AR-15 rifle in the attack, had been living in a home marked by abuse, neglect, and instability.

His father, Colin Gray, purchased the AR-15 rifle as a Christmas gift, despite the boy being investigated in 2023 for threatening violence at his school. This decision has drawn sharp criticism, as the authorities were already aware of the boy’s previous threats to shoot people at the same school.

The shooter’s mother, Marcee, had a long history of legal troubles, including arrests related to drug abuse and domestic violence. Neighbors described her as neglectful and abusive, often locking her children out of the house. A neighbor recounted the heartbreaking scenes of the children, including Gray, banging on the back door, crying for their mother to let them in. On occasion, the children would even beg for food from nearby households.

“Sometimes they would be at our door, crying for food. It was devastating,” a neighbor told The New York Post, recalling the family’s struggles.

Marcee’s criminal record, spanning over 17 years, includes charges such as domestic violence, drug possession, property damage, and DUI offenses. She had been jailed as recently as April this year. One neighbor recalled finding her passed out in the driveway with the car running and loud music playing early in the morning. Worse still, Marcee would reportedly drive her younger son to daycare while under the influence.

Despite the turmoil, Gray’s neighbors described him as quiet and introverted, not displaying the aggressive behavior often associated with troubled children. He frequently missed school and was seen wandering through his empty house or nearby woods.

“He wasn’t a bully or a mean kid. He was so quiet,” a neighbor recalled.

The boy’s maternal grandfather, however, pointed fingers at the father, accusing him of creating a hostile environment for the family. “His dad didn’t beat him physically, but there was a lot of screaming and yelling. He treated my daughter the same way,” the grandfather told CNN, but added that the teen had never exhibited anger.

Gray’s aunt also spoke out, telling The Washington Post that her nephew had been struggling with mental health issues for months before the shooting. She said he had been “begging for help from everyone around him” but received none, contributing to the tragic outcome.

As the investigation into the shooting continues, questions are being raised about the environment in which Gray was raised, the warning signs that were missed, and the responsibility of the adults in his life who failed to intervene.
