Trump Warns Iran’s Trading Partners of Economic Action, India’s Exports Under Watch

New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has warned countries against providing Iran an “economic lifeline,” cautioning that any nation, financial institution or business assisting Tehran could face severe economic consequences, a threat that carries particular significance for India given its trading relationship with Iran.

Trump Calls for Allies to Isolate Iran

Trump described his warning as part of what he called the “most crushing economic operation” against Iran, urging allies to stand with the United States to isolate and defeat the perceived Iranian threat. His warning covers a broad range of activities, including oil smuggling, cash transfers, currency swap lines, exchange houses, ship registries and front companies, with any country allowing its financial institutions, businesses, airports or government entities to support Iran facing what he termed “tremendous” economic consequences.

India’s Trade Surplus with Iran Has Shrunk Considerably

According to data from the Indian Embassy in Tehran, India’s exports to Iran stood at $1.25 billion in 2025-26, while imports were significantly lower at $370 million, giving India a trade surplus of roughly $880 million. However, this trade relationship has declined sharply over the years, from $17.03 billion in 2018-19 to just $1.68 billion by 2024-25, making India’s current Iran exposure relatively modest for an economy of its size.

India Exports Rice, Tea, Pharmaceuticals to Iran

India’s exports to Iran extend beyond energy, including basmati rice, tea, sugar, fresh fruits, drugs and pharmaceuticals, along with spices and cereals, while Iran supplies India with pistachios, dates, apples and kiwis. Any disruption to this trade could particularly affect exporters of agricultural products, food items and pharmaceuticals, with the greater risk lying not in trade halting entirely but in payments, shipping and logistics becoming more complicated should US sanctions widen or enforcement intensify, especially given ongoing pressure around the Strait of Hormuz, where ships are being rerouted and freight rates have risen.

India’s Overall Exports Show Strong Growth, Diversifying Away from Iran

Despite disruptions linked to the US-Iran conflict, India’s merchandise exports reached a record $44.24 billion in July, marking a 19.6 percent year-on-year increase. Engineering goods exports rose 17.7 percent to $12.24 billion, while electronics exports jumped 57.4 percent to around $5.9 billion, and exports to the Middle East also grew 8.6 percent to $5.7 billion. India has increasingly diversified its export markets toward ASEAN, Africa, South Asia and North-East Asia, with exports to China rising 64.57 percent to $2.2 billion in July and shipments to Singapore jumping 83.7 percent to $1.6 billion, while exports to the US also grew 12.85 percent to $9.02 billion.

Impact on India Likely to Be Limited but Not Negligible

While Indian exporters engaged in trade with Iran could face higher shipping costs, payment complications and weaker demand if US pressure on Tehran intensifies, the overall impact is unlikely to pose a major shock to the Indian economy given the already substantial decline in bilateral trade, with experts noting that India is better positioned to absorb such disruptions than it may have been in previous years.
