New Delhi, Feb 17: A 47-member NDRF team that included the canine squad members Rambo and Honey returned to India on Friday after carrying out a 10-day rescue operation from earthquake-stricken Turkey. A four-person Indian canine squad working in earthquake-devastated Turkey included Julie, Romio, Honey, and Rambo.

A day after a devastating earthquake struck Turkey, killing more than 40,000 people and leaving millions homeless, two separate teams of the National Disaster Response Force set off for Turkey with the Labradors, trained for sniffing and rescue missions.

Shortly after the magnitude 7.8 earthquake devastated Turkey, India declared ‘Operation Dost’ and dispatched a force from the Indian Army to establish the 60 Para Field Hospital and the NDRF for search and rescue operations, as well as relief and humanitarian assistance to the ‘Dost’ area.

Although while teams from other nations have also used their services, six NDRF canines stationed in Turkey have proven to be ‘very very helpful’ in rescuing survivors from under the rubble, officials told news agency PTI.

Two days after announcing a $400 million plea for Syrians, the UN on Thursday made a request for more than $1 billion in funding for the Turkish rescue mission. Notably, the death toll from the earthquake in Turkey and Syria has gone past 41,000.
