Amritsar: Two separate explosion incidents near defence establishments in Punjab’s Jalandhar and Amritsar within a span of two hours on Tuesday night have raised serious security concerns in the border state, though no fatalities were reported in either incident.

Scooter Fire Outside BSF Headquarters in Jalandhar

The first incident occurred around 8 pm outside the main gate of the BSF headquarters in Jalandhar, when a parked scooter caught fire with a blast-like sound heard up to a kilometre away. The impact shattered windows of a nearby car and glass panes of a shop, with cracks appearing in several other surfaces up to 300 metres away. The scooter belonged to a delivery worker named Gurpreet Singh, who had stepped away from the vehicle when it suddenly caught fire. Jalandhar Police Commissioner Dhanpreet Kaur said investigations are underway from all angles, including technical faults and external interference, with CCTV footage being closely analysed.

Explosion at Army Camp Boundary Wall in Amritsar

Over two hours later and around 100 kilometres away, an explosion occurred along the outer wall of the Army’s Khasa Camp on Amritsar’s Attari Road. Amritsar Rural SSP Suhail Qasim Mir said metal fragments were found embedded in the boundary wall, indicating that someone had thrown an explosive device at the wall. Preliminary reports suggest masked individuals carried out the attack before fleeing the scene.

Political Reactions Pour In

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann described the blasts as BJP’s preparation for the upcoming Punjab elections, accusing the party of spreading fear to gain votes. Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring called the incidents deeply alarming and flagged serious national security concerns. Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia questioned whether law and order in a border state had completely collapsed. BJP General Secretary Parminder Singh Brar criticised the AAP government’s handling of security in the state.
