New Delhi, June 29: Twitter has been given until July 4 to abide with all the past orders, according to government sources. Twitter may lose its position as an intermediary, meaning it will be responsible for any remarks made on its platform, if it doesn’t meet the deadline of July 4 set by the Ministry of Electronics and IT.
“A notice was issued on June 27 to Twitter to comply with all government orders issued till date. Twitter was issued notices earlier this month but it did not comply with it. This is the final notice,” sources told PTI.
However, an email query sent to Twitter elicited no immediate response. On various times, Twitter and the government have clashed. In response to a request from the government in 2021, the microblogging platform on June 26 presented a list of more than 80 Twitter accounts and tweets that it had prohibited.
Multiple accounts and a few tweets from the international advocacy organisation Freedom House, journalists, lawmakers, and backers of the farmers’ protest were requested to be blocked by the government.
The government source, however, claimed that Twitter has not yet complied with a number of other demands, and they have been given until July 4 to do so.
