Visakhapatnam: A tragic fire incident aboard the Tatanagar–Ernakulam Express claimed one life after two passenger coaches caught fire near Yalamanchili in Andhra Pradesh, around 66 km from Visakhapatnam, triggering an emergency response from railway and police authorities.
Fire Breaks Out Past Midnight
According to a senior police official, information about the fire was received at around 12:45 am. The blaze engulfed two air-conditioned coaches of the train while it was passing through Yalamanchili. At the time of the incident, one coach had 82 passengers and the other had 76 passengers onboard.
One Body Found, Passenger Identified
During rescue and inspection operations, a dead body was recovered from the B1 coach. The deceased was identified as Chandrasekhar Sundaram. Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause of death, which will be determined after forensic examination.
Train Resumes Journey After Coaches Detached
The two fire-damaged coaches were detached from the train to ensure safety. Afterward, the remaining coaches of the Tatanagar–Ernakulam Express continued towards Ernakulam. Railway officials confirmed that passengers from the affected coaches will be assisted and sent to their respective destinations through alternative arrangements.
Forensic Probe Underway
Two forensic teams have been deployed to investigate the cause of the fire. Officials said that all possibilities, including electrical faults and other technical reasons, are being examined.
Railway Helplines Issued for Assistance
The Railways have activated multiple helpline numbers to provide assistance and train-related information to passengers and their families, including helplines at Elamanchili, Anakapalle, Tuni, Samalkot, Rajahmundry, Eluru and Vijayawada.
