Dumka, April 9: Two children, both being siblings, died after they drowned in the Brahmani river while taking bath, in Bhurkunda village under the Mufassil police station of the district this afternoon.

Both the deceased children have been identified as Vishal Pandit and Amit Pandit of the age group between 8 and 10 years whose father Sanju Pandit is a driver of a private vehicle and is currently out of the home.

Quoting the eyewitnesses’ account, police said that both the deceased brothers had gone to take bath in the river situated half kilometres away from their home when the elder one Amit Pandit got himself in trouble after venturing into deep water.

“Witnessing his elder sibling drowning in the river the younger brother could not resist himself from attempting to save him and died together” Umesh Ram the officer in-charge (OC) of the Muffassil police station said.

Meanwhile, the family members of the deceased siblings have sniffed foul play in the incident and have levelled allegations against someone having enmity with the bereaved family over a land dispute.

OC said that the dead bodies of both the deceased were sent for postmortem after they were declared dead at the Phulo Jhano Medical College and Hospital where they were rushed after being fished out from the river.

“The investigation into the matter is underway to arrive at any conclusion” the OC added.

Meanwhile, the incident of the drowning of children in water bodies is the third of its kind in a week at Mufassil police station.

Earlier, two children died followed by two other children after they drowned in a pond on April 3 and April 7 respectively in Asansol and Lakhikundi villages.
