Jamshedpur, May 15: Two students of Sakchi-based Motilal Nehru Public School (MNPS) drowned in the Kharkai river along the Gamharia thana area in the adjoining Seraikela-Kharsawan district on Monday morning.
The victims were identified as Sobhit Singh (18) and Srujan Kumar (17), both residents of Subhas Colony in Mango and Laxminagar in Telco respectively.
Both the victims were plus two students of the MNPS and had come out of their houses on the plea of playing cricket.
The incident took place at the Jhilingora check dam along the Kharkai River about 10 km away from the heart of the city.
According to police, a total of six students from the same school had come to the Jhilingora check-dam where they intended to take a bath.
“First Sobhit had taken a plunge in the check-dam with the rest sitting on the bank. But he apparently started drowning in the dam which prompted Srujan Kumar to jump into the water body for saving him. Eventually, both the boys were drowned, ” said the Gamharia thana OC, SS Das while talking to lagatar24.com.
The OC said the rest of the students had also tried to save their companions by screaming for help from the local residents, but it was too late.
Soon the police were informed about the tragedy, leading the police to inform the family members of both the drowning victims immediately.
The bodies were fished out from the check-dam after the police had pressed local divers.
The police have shifted both bodies to Seraikela Sadar Hospital for postmortem.
