Jamshedpur, Nov 12: Two youths were arrested for selling “brown sugar” from the dickey of a Scooty at crowded Ramlila Maidan area in Sakchi.

While making the arrests, the police seized 78 packets of the narcotic drugs, Rs 4,260, two smartphones and a Scooty from the accused.

Those arrested were identified as Sonu Jaiswal (32) and Mohammed Sahil, both residents of Sitaramdera area.

Sonu who was the main operator in the drugs selling racket has a criminal record and had been arrested under the NDPS Act from the Sitaramdera and Sidhgora police station area earlier also.

Revealing about the breakthrough, deputy superintendent of police (Composit Control Room) Animesh Gupta said that they were tipped off that two youths were clandestinely selling brown sugar near the Ramlila Maidan.

“Having got the information, we set up a team of plain-clothed cops and surrounded the Ramlila Maidan area. After observing for a while we found the two who were doing a brisk business from a stationary Scooty. Soon we swooped over the duo and caught them red-handed, ” said Gupta while talking to newsmen this afternoon.

The DSP said the accused would sell the drugs by using some code word that is circulated among their customers over the phone.

“On being interrogated, the accused revealed that they used to get the brown sugar from a woman who resides at the Adityapur Muslim Bustee in the adjoining Seraikela-Kharsawan district.

The senior police officer said on earlier occasions too several drug-peddlers, including women had been arrested for selling brown sugar. He pointed out that those arrested earlier had also divulged that they used to procure the drugs from the Adityapur Muslim Bustee.

Notably, till 2020 the brown sugar used to be available at the Adityapur Muslim Bustee only, but after the drugs kingpin, Dolly Perveen was arrested by the Seraikela-Kharsawan police, the drugs peddling racket spread over to various localities of the steel city.
