Lucknow, Jan 13: MLA Mukesh Verma has resigned, adding to the BJP’s growing concerns in Uttar Pradesh. He is the seventh member of the legislature to resign in the last three days.

Mukesh represents Firozabad’s Shikohabad constituency as an MLA. Mukesh Verma accused the Uttar Pradesh government with abandoning Dalits, other backward castes, minority communities, farmers, and the unemployed.

“During the tenure of 5 years by the BJP government, no attention was given to the leaders and public representatives of the Dalit, backward and minority communities, and these communities were neglected. Hence, I resign from the primary membership of the Bharatiya Janata Party,” he tweeted in hindi.

Notably, Swami Prasad Maurya, also a prominent Other Backward Class leader, had quit the state cabinet. On Wednesday, BJP MLA Avtar Singh Bhadana quit the party and is joining the Rashtriya Lok Dal, an SP ally. On Tuesday, Vinay Kumar Shakya from Bidhuna, too, announced his resignation. In addition to this, three other BJP MLAs Tindwari’s Brajesh Prajapati, Tilhar’s Roshan Lal Varma and Bilhaur’s Bhagwati Sagar  announced their resignation.

On Wednesday, however, two Uttar Pradesh MLAs from the Congress and the SP, Naresh Saini and Hari Om Yadav, joined the BJP, a pleasant move for the ruling party as it deals with the abrupt defections from its ranks.

The BJP is likely to suffer a setback in the next Assembly elections as a result of the resignations. Between February 10 and March 7, Uttar Pradesh voters will elect 403 MLAs in seven phases. The results of the election will be announced on March 10.
