New Delhi, Jan 30: Sanjay Raut, the leader of the Shiv Sena, accused officials of three districts in Uttar Pradesh of “misuse of power” and said that the nominations of six to seven of his party’s candidates were rejected illegally. Raut stated that all essential documentation were given to the officials on time, and that he will meet with the Election Commission to discuss the matter.

This comes only days before Uttar Pradesh’s Assembly elections, which will be held in numerous phases over the following two months.

According to the report, district magistrates exploited their powers in six to seven constituencies in Noida, Bijnor, and Meerut, rejecting Shiv Sena candidates’ nominations “under duress” in order to prevent the party from entering the state.

The Rajya Sabha member said that the party’s candidates in Uttar Pradesh have been threatened and requested to withdraw from the election.

Some people are concerned that the Sena candidates would win or ensure the defeat of their nominees, Raut remarked, a veiled jab at the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Notably, elections for 403 Assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh will commence from February 10, in seven phases. The second phase of the Uttar Pradesh elections will be held on February 14, the third phase on February 20, the fourth phase on February 23, the fifth phase on February 27, the sixth phase on March 3 and the seventh and the last phase will be conducted on March 7.

The counting of votes will be done on March 10.
