Ranchi: Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi has raised serious concerns over the Jharkhand government’s plan to conduct upcoming municipal elections using the outdated October 2024 voter list. He warned that this could deprive thousands of newly registered voters of their constitutional rights.
Concerns Over Exclusion of New Voters
Marandi pointed out that municipal elections are proposed to be held using the same voter list used in the last assembly elections. This means only those who registered before October 1, 2024, will be eligible to vote. As a result, individuals who registered in the last 15 months or transferred their names to new locations may be excluded from the voting process.
Violates Democratic Principles
He emphasized that both annual and semi-annual voter list revisions are standard electoral procedures. Holding elections based on an outdated list violates democratic values, he argued, as it denies eligible citizens their right to vote. Marandi urged the state government to ensure that updated electoral rolls are used so every eligible citizen can participate in choosing their local representatives.
