New Delhi, Dec 15: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued a notice to the police on the plea filed by Ansal brothers challenging a trial court order which dismissed their petition seeking suspension of sentence for tampering with evidence in the 1997 Uphaar fire tragedy case.

Justice Subramonium Prasad asked the respondents to file a response on the petition and listed the matter for further hearing on January 6, 2022.

The Ansals have moved Delhi High Court to challenge the order passed by Additional Sessions Judge Anil Antil dated December 3, 2021 which dismissed the petition seeking suspension of sentence in tampering with evidence in the 1997 Uphaar fire tragedy case during the pendency of their appeal.

Earlier, the Delhi Patiala House court had also imposed a fine of Rs 2.25 crore on Ansal brothers. Chief metropolitan magistrate, Pankaj Sharma, also imposed a fine of Rs. 3 lakh each on the other three accused.

Notably, on June 13, 1997, a fire broke out at Uphaar Talkies located in Green Park, Delhi. In this incident, 59 people died and more than 100 people were injured. The film ‘Border’ was being shown in talkies that day. The transformer of the theatre caught fire, which later spread to other parts as well. It was revealed in the investigation that there were no security arrangements in the talkies to combat fire tragedies.
