Washington: The United States carried out fresh strikes on Iran on Tuesday, hitting more than 80 targets and revoking an oil sales permit in response to attacks by Tehran on three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, with officials describing the operation as significantly larger in scale than previous US action against Iran.
US Targets Air Defence Systems, Radar Sites and IRGC Boats
According to a statement from the US Central Command (Centcom), the strikes targeted Iranian air defence systems, coastal radar installations, command and control networks, as well as more than 60 small boats belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), operating in and around the Strait of Hormuz. The operation was carried out using precision munitions, though the exact locations of the targets were not disclosed. An American official told Axios that the overnight operation was four to five times larger in scope and power compared to the strikes launched by the US ten days earlier.
Strikes Aimed at Curbing Iran’s Ability to Disrupt Global Trade Routes
The US stated that the strikes were intended to reduce Iran’s capacity to continue attacking international commercial vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil and energy transit corridors. Centcom added that its forces remain positioned and ready to hold Iran accountable should any agreement be violated or not adhered to going forward.
