Canberra: As Americans cast their votes, Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar predicted on Wednesday that the United States would lean toward an isolationist approach regardless of the election’s outcome. Speaking at a panel discussion in Canberra, Jaishankar noted that this shift has been evident in US foreign policy trends for some time.
“Starting from President Obama, the US has shown a cautious approach towards global engagements,” he said, referencing the US reluctance to deploy troops and the recent withdrawal from Afghanistan under President Joe Biden. While former President Donald Trump was more vocal in expressing this stance, Jaishankar emphasized the need to view US policy from a broader, national perspective rather than as a reflection of any one administration’s ideology.
Reflecting on this shift, Jaishankar said, “The dominance and generosity the US showed in earlier times may not continue. We must be prepared for a world where US influence operates differently.”
However, he also underscored that India’s relationship with the US remains robust, with growth anticipated in bilateral cooperation.
Global Collaboration and Shared Responsibility
Jaishankar, alongside the foreign ministers of Australia and New Zealand, discussed the importance of collaborative international frameworks, as global dynamics evolve with rising protectionism. New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Winston Peters echoed this sentiment, noting, “The world we aimed to build is changing, and we must adapt.”
The ministers collectively emphasized the need for their nations to actively shape the global landscape in alignment with their shared interests.
