Abu Dhabi, May 15: Vice President Venkaiah Naidu arrived in the United Arab Emirates on Sunday to pay his respects to Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who died on Friday.
“Vice President @MVenkaiahNaidu arrives in Abu Dhabi to pay respects to HH Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Late President of UAE,” tweeted Official Spokesperson, Ministry of External Affairs, Arindam Bagchi.
President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi both expressed sorrow over Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s death on Friday.
S Jaishankar, India’s External Affairs Minister, paid a visit to the UAE Embassy in New Delhi on Sunday to express India’s condolences. On Saturday, India marked a national day of sorrow.
“Under the leadership of Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, India-UAE ties prospered greatly to the mutual benefit of the people of the two countries. He took exceptional care of the large Indian community in UAE, who held him in the high esteem,” MEA said in its statement.
Earlier this week, the UAE’s Federal Supreme Council met to elect a new President, who will serve a five-year term before being eligible for re-election.
Members of the Federal Supreme Council elected Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan as the new president.
PM Modi congratulated Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the ruler of Abu Dhabi, on his election as President of the UAE, and expressed optimism that the two nations’ Comprehensive Strategic Partnership would continue to flourish in the future.
