Giridih, May 28: Illegal sand is picked up from the Sakri River located in Gawan and Patna, loaded on dozens of tractors and sold in Third and Dhanwar blocks. The cost of sand per tractor is 3 to 4 thousand rupees. Illegal sand lifting is done daily.
Even on May 27, sand was being picked up and taken by tractors. The villagers of Dabar village got information about taking sand. Villagers stopped half a dozen sand-laden tractors in the late evening of 27th May. Villagers say that due to sand lifting, big pits have been formed in the river in many places. During the rainy season, these potholes can cause damage to life and property.
The villagers have demanded the police administration to ban sand lifting. When the tractors were stopped, the drivers tried to ram the tractors with the intention of killing the villagers. Seeing the protest of the villagers, the tractor drivers fled leaving their vehicles standing.
