Dubai: After India’s historic Champions Trophy 2025 victory against New Zealand, Virat Kohli addressed the growing buzz around his and Rohit Sharma’s international future. While no retirement announcement was made, Kohli reflected on India’s journey and hinted that the team is well-prepared for the future.

“India’s Future Is in Safe Hands” – Kohli

Following India’s four-wicket win in the final, Kohli expressed his joy at bouncing back after a tough phase earlier in the year.

“It’s been amazing, we wanted to bounce back after a tough Australian tour and win a big tournament. So to win the Champions Trophy is amazing,” Kohli said.

He credited the young talent in the squad for stepping up and emphasized how senior players are contributing by sharing their experience.

“There’s so much talent in the dressing room. They’re trying to take their game further, and we’re just happy to be of help. That’s what makes this Indian team so strong.”

On India’s Dominance and the Road Ahead

Kohli spoke about the team’s resilience and its ability to deliver under pressure.

“These are the moments you play for—titles, pressure situations, and stepping up when needed. Everyone contributed at some point during the tournament, and that’s why we won.”

He then hinted at the long-term vision for the team, stating that India is set for the next eight years.

“When you leave, you want to leave the team in a better place. I feel we’ve got a squad that’s ready to take on the world for the next eight years. Shubman (Gill) has been outstanding, Shreyas (Iyer) has played top knocks, KL (Rahul) has finished games, and Hardik (Pandya) has been superb with the bat.”

Praise for New Zealand

Kohli also acknowledged New Zealand’s fighting spirit, praising their disciplined execution and world-class fielding unit.

“New Zealand has always been a formidable opponent. Their talent pool might be limited, but their execution and commitment keep them in the game. They’re easily the best fielding unit, and it’s tough to see my good friend Kane Williamson on the losing side.”

What’s Next for Kohli and Rohit?

While Kohli’s comments suggest a gradual transition in Indian cricket, he stopped short of announcing his or Rohit Sharma’s future plans. However, the statement “when you leave” has fueled speculation that the two senior players might be considering their next steps in international cricket.

With India’s third Champions Trophy win, Kohli and Rohit have solidified their legacies, but the question remains—how much longer will they continue?
