New Delhi: Karan Adani, Managing Director of Adani Ports, lauded Kerala’s Vizhinjam Port today for its historic achievement in welcoming its first mothership, ‘San Fernando’, from Maersk, the world’s second-largest shipping company.
Describing the occasion as a “glorious achievement in Indian maritime history,” Karan Adani emphasized the significance of Vizhinjam Port’s new role as India’s first transshipment terminal and largest deepwater port.
“The arrival of ‘San Fernando’ at our harbor symbolizes a new era in Indian maritime capabilities,” said Karan Adani. “Vizhinjam Port is equipped with South Asia’s most advanced container handling technology, surpassing even our own advanced Mundra Port. With ongoing automation and the implementation of the Vessel Traffic Management System, Vizhinjam will emerge as one of the world’s most technologically sophisticated transshipment ports.”
Located near Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, Vizhinjam Port is owned by the Adani Group and is slated to achieve full operational status in the coming months. Currently, a significant portion of India’s container traffic is transshipped through foreign ports due to the absence of dedicated transshipment facilities in India.
“Until now, India has relied heavily on foreign ports for transshipment, handling about 75% of our transshipped cargo,” noted Karan Adani. “Vizhinjam Port will change this landscape by facilitating direct transshipment into India, enhancing connectivity along major global trade routes linking the US, Europe, Africa, and the Far East with the Indian subcontinent.”
The strategic location of Vizhinjam Port positions it as a crucial hub in international trade, promising to boost India’s maritime infrastructure and economic competitiveness on a global scale.
