Srinagar: A fashion show featuring semi-nude models in skimpy outfits at the ski resort of Gulmarg has triggered a major political storm in Jammu and Kashmir. The event, held during the holy month of Ramzan, has drawn sharp criticism from religious leaders, political figures, and social activists, with accusations that it disrespected local sentiments and cultural values.

Opposition Targets Omar Abdullah

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah faced heated opposition in the Assembly today, with political opponents questioning his government’s role in permitting such an event. In response, Abdullah distanced the administration from the show, stating it was a private affair and that no government approval was granted.

“It was a private party, and there was no government involvement. No permission was taken from us. Instructions have been given to investigate if anything illegal happened, and action will be taken accordingly.”

However, the Opposition remained unconvinced, arguing that shrugging off accountability would only encourage more such events.

Mehbooba Mufti’s Sharp Criticism

Former Chief Minister and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti lambasted the administration, calling the event “deeply troubling” and “shocking.”

“To see vulgar images emerging from Gulmarg during the sacred month of Ramzan is beyond shocking. Such an event should never have been allowed in the first place. Private hoteliers promoting this kind of obscenity are blatantly disregarding our cultural values.”

She further accused the government of ignoring its responsibility, adding:

“Simply labeling it as a private affair is not enough. This sets a dangerous precedent and threatens our culture and traditions.”

Clerics, Activists Condemn Event

Senior religious leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq also condemned the event, calling it “outrageous” and “unacceptable in Kashmir’s Sufi and saintly traditions.”

“Hosting an obscene fashion show in Gulmarg during Ramzan is a blatant insult to the religious sentiments of Kashmiris. Those responsible should be held accountable immediately.”

Social activist Raja Muzaffar Bhat also demanded an explanation, questioning the role of the Tourism Department in allowing such an event to take place.

“Who allowed this nude fashion show in Gulmarg during Ramzan? The Tourism Department and Gulmarg Development Authority need to clarify. Why is there an attempt to demolish our moral, ethical, cultural, and religious values?”

Government Orders Probe

Acknowledging public outrage, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has sought a detailed report within 24 hours on how the event was organized and whether any laws were violated.

While Abdullah expressed understanding of the public’s anger, the controversy continues to escalate, with opposition parties and religious leaders demanding strict action against those responsible.
