Hazaribag, April 23: 1910 prisoners and undertrials of Loknayak Jai Prakash Narayan central jail are facing a water crisis because out of nine deep borings eight failed and one is not capable of meeting the daily water requirement. Even a well situated in jail campus is not having enough water with prisoners and undertrials using it to take baths.
Sources said on 52 acres of land of the jail, prisoners are growing green vegetables in huge quantities every year. But lack of water has put a brake on agricultural work as well. The jail is also having a supply water connection but again supply is not adequate.
Regarding the open jail situated close to the central jail, the situation is the same. The three deep borings failed here worsening the water crisis situation. Prisoners here are struggling for water as well as it has become tough for them to ensure water availability for the dairy farm here. There are handpumps outside the jail campus which is the only source of water for them right now.
The central jail dairy farm is having 20 cows giving 78 litres of milk daily whereas the open jail has fifteen cows producing 70 litres of milk daily.
Jail superintendent Kumar Chandrashekhar admitted to water problems in both jails. He said for new deep borings, he has sent a proposal to the higher-ups for their approval.
