New Delhi: In a heated exchange amid Maharashtra’s election campaign, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath responded to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s recent criticism. Speaking at a rally in Amravati, Yogi Adityanath referenced Kharge’s personal tragedy, recalling how Kharge’s family home in Hyderabad was destroyed in communal violence. Yogi alleged that Kharge “buried his feelings for political gain,” alluding to Congress’ alleged vote bank politics.
“Khargeji, don’t get angry at me. I respect your age. If you want to be angry, be angry at the Hyderabad Nizam. The Nizam’s ‘razakars’ burned your village, killing Hindus, and burned your respected mother, sister, and family members,” Yogi said, urging Kharge to present “the truth” to the nation.
Exchange of Sharp Jibes
The war of words began after Kharge, on Sunday, indirectly criticized Yogi Adityanath’s political approach. Kharge commented on “political leaders in the guise of sadhus,” calling out the UP CM for “spreading hatred” with divisive statements like “batenge toh katenge.” Kharge added, “Either wear white clothes or, if you’re a sanyasi, leave politics.”
Yogi defended his remarks, saying they aimed to highlight communal violence, not division. He accused the opposition of prioritizing votes over the safety of Hindus, pointing to Bangladesh’s recent political unrest. However, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and his Nationalist Congress Party faction, a BJP ally in Maharashtra, also distanced themselves from Yogi’s comments.
Upcoming Elections
The Maharashtra Assembly election is set for November 20, with results to be announced on November 23. The rhetoric surrounding this election has intensified, reflecting the high stakes in the state’s political landscape.
