Mumbai: With the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance clinching a decisive victory in the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly election, the focus has shifted to selecting the next Chief Minister. Devendra Fadnavis, a two-time Chief Minister and key BJP leader, confirmed that the decision will be made collectively by alliance leaders, under the guidance of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

No Disputes Over Leadership

Speaking to reporters, Fadnavis emphasized unity within the alliance: “There will be no dispute about who will be the Chief Minister. From day one, it was decided that leaders of the three parties will sit together post-election to decide this. The decision will be acceptable to everyone.”

Outgoing Chief Minister Eknath Shinde echoed similar sentiments, stating, “Just as we fought the elections together, all three parties will sit together to decide.”

Potential Contenders for the Role

On paper, the race for the top post appears to be between Devendra Fadnavis and Eknath Shinde. However, the BJP’s reliance on the Shinde-led Shiv Sena to cross the 145-seat majority mark adds a layer of complexity.

Five years ago, Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena broke away from the BJP after being denied a rotational chief ministerial arrangement. Shinde, who led a rebellion within the Sena in 2022, may now leverage his position to push for continuity in his leadership.

Meanwhile, Ajit Pawar, leading the NCP faction, could be another contender for a key role, possibly retaining his position as Deputy Chief Minister.

BJP’s Alternative Approach?

In a surprising move, the BJP could consider appointing a new face as Chief Minister, similar to its strategy in Madhya Pradesh last year when Shivraj Singh Chouhan was replaced by Mohan Yadav to balance caste dynamics ahead of the federal elections.

Implications for Maharashtra Politics

The final decision on the Chief Minister is likely to set the tone for the Mahayuti’s governance in Maharashtra. As BJP enjoys its best-ever performance in the state, its leadership choice will be crucial in ensuring stability within the alliance and fulfilling the promises made during the campaign.
