Jamshedpur, Sept 28: A wild elephant which was causing havoc in the Chandil, Ichagar and Kukdu blocks in the adjoining Seraikela-Kharsawan district until recently was found lying dead in a field at Saparam village under Kukdu block on Thursday morning.

The elephant estimated to be about 60 years old had been in a house-damaging spree in the villages under Chandil forest range. The villagers were upset as the lone elephant would also damage standing crops regularly.

But despite incurring loss caused by the tusker, a large number of villagers, including women gathered near the carcass at the Saparam village and offered tribute to the departed soul of the animal today.  The villagers also performed Puja by putting flower garlands on the carcass.

A forester posted in the Chandil range, Mukesh Mahto said the deceased elephant had left the Chandil range area three months ago and had returned to the area a week ago only.

“The elephant had gone towards Ranchi jungle along with a herd three months ago, but recently it had fallen victim to electrocution somewhere in Ranchi forest range. As a result of the electric shock it had received, the elephant had become very weak. It somehow returned to its old area and anchored at a field for the past four days. The elephant was found lying dead this morning,” said Mukesh while talking to lagatar24.com.

A team of forest department officials including a veterinarian has left for Saparam village to conduct an autopsy of the tusker.
